Notorious Delaware bottleneck’s final weekend
The hairpin exit that takes drivers from I-95 south to Delaware Route 1 south that has caused daily headaches for drivers for years is just days away from closing for good.
The newly constructed flyover ramp that will replace the twisting exit that slowed cars is scheduled to open in the early morning hours on Tuesday, August 27.
The new ramp is designed to allow drivers to maintain highway speed as they transition from 95 to Route 1 on the new overpass bridge that crosses the interstate. For years, drivers have been forced to slow- and some times come to a full stop- to negotiate the hairpin exit ramp sometimes referred to as the cloverleaf and cattle shute.
Starting at 7 p.m. on Monday night, the two right lanes of southbound 95 will be closed from the Churchmans Road exit to south of the Route 1 exit. Route 1 southbound will also be closed from the 95 interchange to Rt. 273. The road closures are expected to last through 5 a.m. Tuesday.
