New Jersey will preserve 1,900 acres of open space in three counties

In a move to preserve 1,900 acres of land as open space, New Jersey will spend $28 million on a deal in Mercer, Monmouth and Burlington counties.

The Department of Environmental Protection has announced a deal with the Flemer family, who operated Princeton Nurseries on the land in Upper Freehold Township, the Associated Press reports.

A 512-acre state wildlife area, 500 acres for the Monmouth and Mercer county park systems and 900 acres of acquisitions of farmland development rights will make up the open space. When owners of the 900 acres of farmland sell the property, they’ll continue to own the land, but will agree to deed restrictions that preserve the space for agriculture.
