New Jersey gets none of $10M in federal rail safety funding

New Jersey is receiving none of the $10 million of federal money awarded to improve safety on rail lines that carry oil.

The administration of Gov. Chris Christie had sought some funding from the Federal Railroad Administration as trains carry millions of gallons of volatile crude through the state.

A state Department of Transportation spokesman tells The Record newspaper the agency is disappointed it didn’t receive any of Thursday’s grants.

Bergenfield Mayor Norman Schmelz says he doubts there are places elsewhere in the country in a “more dire situation than here.”
