Fancy brigades prepare for New Year’s Day

Mummers Fest at the Pennsylvania Convention Center offers families a chance to discover what it takes to be a Mummer.

Every New Year’s Day the fancy brigades strut their best in the Center often sporting some of the most elaborate costumes, choreography and intricate floats for a chance to top the scoreboard.

For months the brigades slave to perfect their performances.

The Mummers festival allows audiences to get a sneak peek at the sweat and handy work that occurs behind the scenes of the parade at the brigades’ rehearsal space.

Excited children and adults mill around, but the busy Mummers don’t seem to notice.  Newsworks asks, “What does it take to be one of the fancies?”

To catch a glimpse of the fancy brigades’ performances at this year’s parade carve out a spot on Broad Street at City Hall, Sansom, Pine, Washington, Ritner, or Shunk Street.  The parade begins at 10 a.m. and continues thorough the evening until about 7 p.m.  Ticketed performances are held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.  For more information about the fancy brigades and Mummer’s Fest, visit: http://www.fancybrigade.com
