Multimillion-dollar upgrade complete at Mt. Airy’s Pleasant Playground [gallery]

Residents and officials alike gathered Saturday morning to mark the opening of a $3 million recreation facility at East Mt. Airy’s Pleasant Playground.

The long-awaited opening marks the end of a project 10 years in the making at Chew Avenue and Slocum Street.

The facility — which replaced an existing structure — features two activity rooms, a multipurpose room, staff kitchen, modern restrooms, new playground equipment, exterior lights and a water-spray system.

Helping to secure funding for the makeover were former and current Eighth District City Councilwomen Donna Reed Miller and Cindy Bass, state Rep. Cherelle Parker and state Sen. Leanna Washington.
