Mileage fraud

A Montgomery County man was sentenced to prison today for altering the odometers of the used cars he was selling. Yakov Babchinetskiy of Huntingdon Valley received 100 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his role in a scheme to alter odometers on used motor vehicles, provide false odometer statements, and commit wire and securities fraud.

Babchinetskiy conspired with three others between 2002 and 2005 to purchase high-mileage cars, alter the odometers and sell the vehicles to dealers.

Two of the other defendants were sentenced in 2008 and the third remains on the loose. Babchinetskiy will also have to pay $4,098,165 to consumers, retailers and insurance companies.
