Mental Health Awareness Month

There is a political movement underway to mandate that the treatment of mental illness is covered by insurance companies in the same way physical illness is. Families who are dealing with the challenges of mental illness are also struggling with stigma.

About 26 percent of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a mental disorder every year – that’s about one in four adults . They could experience anything from panic attacks to depression or anorexia.

May is Mental health Awareness Month – WHYY’s Behavioral Health reporter Maiken Scott spoke with psychologist Dan Gottlieb about what has changed in terms of treatment and attitudes toward mental illness.
