Meet candidate Cindy Bass

The last time there was an open council seat for Philadelphia’s Eighth District was 16 years ago. Now that Democratic Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller is leaving, voters in Northwest Philadelphia have a real opportunity to help decide the future direction of the district.

In a district that stretches from North Philly to Chestnut Hill, seven Democratic candidates are in the running in the May 17 primary election. With no Republican candidates on the ballot, the decision Democratic voters will make in just over a month will essentially determine their next councilperson.

In an effort to ensure you have a chance to learn about all of the candidates, NewsWorks today presents the first of seven video statements recorded by the candidates about who they are and what kind of a city councilperson they will be.

Bass is a senior policy advisor for U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah (D., Pa.). In the past, the East Mt. Airy resident has worked for Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D., Pa.) when Schwartz was a state senator; she is a past president of East Mt. Airy Neighbors and was the first employee of what is now Mt. Airy USA. This is Bass’ second time running for the Eighth District seat.
