Dems pushing for further gains in Delaware County

For decades, Philadelphia’s suburban counties have voted solidly Republican. But in the latest development confirming a long-term political shift, Delaware County Democrats say they’ve reached a major milestone in voter registration.

Delaware County could be considered purple these days — roughly divided between the blue of Democrats and Republican red. According to the latest statistics, both parties have 44 percent of registered voters.

That even split is a first in a very very long time says Bill Clinton — that’s Bill Clinton, candidate for Delaware County Council.

Clinton is running with a slate of Democrats seeking election to line offices, the judiciary, municipal councils and school boards.

“We have had one-party rule in Delaware County for over 75 years,” he said. “What we’re looking to do this year is open it up.”

Clinton cited the growing strength of local Democratic organizers that have propelled national candidates to success in the county; President Obama, for instance, carried Delaware County overwhelmingly in 2012.

The head of the county’s Republican Committee said that Democrats are counting inactive voters and Republicans still lead by 2,500 voters. Andy Riley said the deciding numbers will come on election day.
