Loaded handgun found in Delaware student’s backpack
A Dickinson High School student faces a series of charges after police found a loaded handgun in his backpack in a classroom.
A school resource officer was tipped off by school officials that the 17-year-old student was carrying the weapon in his backpack. School staff joined the Delaware State Trooper assigned to Dickinson High located the student in a classroom and immediately separated him from his backpack. Inside the bag, police found a fully loaded, Kel-Tec 9mm Luger semiautomatic handgun.
While school staff were securing the gun, the student ran out of the school and into a wooded area. He was located about a half an hour later in the Limestone Acres and brought into custody without incident.
The teen, who was already a convicted felon, is facing charges including carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a weapon in a safe school zone.
Police say there was no immediate threat or danger to the safety of the students or faculty. They are still investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.
