Lakewood’s Tent City being dismantled
Construction crews have begun clearing areas of a longstanding homeless encampment in central New Jersey. The dismantling began on Wednesday in Lakewood’s “Tent City.”
Jeffrey Wild, an attorney representing the homeless residents, tells NJ.com that 31 men and women have been relocated into temporary housing in Ocean County and other locations.
There are still people living in the outdoor, make-shift shelters, but officials are working to relocate them so the entire encampment can be dismantled.
Local and county officials have been trying to shut down Lakewood’s Tent City for years.
A deal was reached between the town and Tent City residents promising no one would be evicted without first being provided adequate indoor housing for at least one year.
