In Philly’s Brewerytown section, the taste of change is bittersweet

WHYY/NewsWorks is launching a new radio and multimedia series called “Around the Corner” that will examine what’s at stake for Philadelphia’s changing neighborhoods in the upcoming city elections.

In this election year, Philadelphia is poised for growth and struggling with change. 

A recent study found the city has been gentrifying at a rapid pace: 1,800 percent since the 1990s, according to an analysis of the data by Philadelphia Magazine.  How the next mayor deals with this trend will go a long way to determining the success of his or her administration.

WHYY/NewsWorks is launching a new radio and multimedia series called “Around the Corner” that will examine what’s at stake for Philadelphia’s changing neighborhoods in the upcoming city elections. 

It will focus on the neighborhood known as “Brewerytown,” which strings out along Girard Avenue across the Schuylkill River from the Philadelphia Zoo and offers a ground-level view of the city’s struggles and hopes.  In Brewerytown, daily life is full of hope, good will and bustle, as well as anxiety and crossed signals.

“Around the Corner” will premier on Friday at 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. during WHYY’s first election special, “Leading Questions.”
