NCAA women’s Sweet 16 in Philadelphia

This weekend, the NCAA basketball tournament continues–for the men and, in case you forgot, for the women, too. Games from the women’s sweet sixteen round are being played in Philadelphia.Caroline Doty is a guard for the University of Connecticut Huskies–a heavy favorite for this year’s tournament.  “We’re actually on the bus headed down to Philly now,” said Doty. She helped the team win the national championship last year, but this year will be a little different. She tore her ACL, and she’s sitting out.

“I try to help out with the people who come off the bench,” she says. “Keep them encouraged if things aren’t going well. If they are going well, keep them hyped up. So, it’s a good experience.”Another good experience, she says, is coming back to Philly–she graduated from Germantown Academy and grew up in Doylestown. She says she gets her reputation from the city, too. Her coaches call her tough, stubborn, and hard-headed.

“I’m proud to be from Philly,” she says. “I take it as a compliment.” The women Huskies play Georgetown at Temple’s Liacouras Center at noon.
