Holiday shortage forces extra hours at Blood Bank
The Blood Bank of Delmarva will now open on the Sundays after Christmas and New Years Day in hopes of avoiding a shortage of platelet donations over the holidays.
On a normal weekend, the donor centers are open Saturday and closed on Sunday, but because both Christmas and New Years Day fall on Saturday, the centers are closed both days. The Blood Bank had been scheduled to be closed both days for the next two weekends, but the need for donations is so high, the group made the rare decision to open on Sunday.
“We cannot be closed two days in a row. It would’ve created a big hole in the supply since platelets only last five days,” says president and CEO Robert Travis. “I can only remember opening up donor schedules on a Sunday one other time in our history. It has been amazing to see these schedules fill up quickly with platelet donors who want to help.”
The Blood Bank’s facilities in Christiana and Dover will be open from 11 AM to 4 PM. Donors can make an appointment by calling 1-888-8-BLOOD-8 or online at delmarvablood.org.
