Green. Urban. Glocal: Architecture + Design by Philadelphia’s Design Schools
The participating schools are choosing which design departments from their institutions will be represented, from architecture and interior design to urban planning and landscape design, and will be featuring the student projects they think most clearly represent each department’s pedagogical philosophies to the public.
The schools collectively chose the theme of this year’s exhibition to highlight to the public the philosophy that good architecture and design address more factors than pleasing aesthetics. Each of the three themes represents a current challenge to designers across departments. “Green” represents the ecological and environmental factors that need to be addressed in future designs to make them sustainable and to protect the planet. “Urban” represents the fact that for the first time in history, more people live in cities than anywhere else – a trend that will only intensify into the 21st Century and which will greatly influence the future of human culture. “Glocal” is a combination of the words “global” and “local”, and highlights the need of designers to address local concerns while taking into account global repercussions.
The Center is excited to bring these forward-thinking designs to the public’s attention and to expose the creative design work that is happening right here in Philadelphia, under the guidance of educators at our local design schools.
