Fire at South Philly Refinery causes black smoke to rise
Philadelphia firefighters and a hazmat team responded to a fire at a South Philly refinery.
The fire occurred at the Sunoco Refinery at 3144 West Passyunk Avenue Saturday afternoon causing black smoke to rise into the sky. Several viewers reported the smoke to NBC10.
Fire officials initially told NBC10 a scheduled burn-off was taking place at the refinery. They later reported however that firefighters were responding to the fire.
According to scanner reports, the fire began inside a processing unit at the refinery. Officials had to shut down the fuel valves in the unit.
The fire was placed under control at 5:37 p.m.
