Fighting the fat in New Castle County

The county is launching an effort to reduce the number of overweight residents.  Currently, more than one quarter of county residents tip the scales as obese.

With help from $30,000 in funding from the Delaware Division of Public Health, New Castle County will launch the LocalMotion Coalition to Fight Obesity.  The coalition includes the Delaware Dietetic Association, the Delaware Center for Horticulture, Healthy Food for Healthy Kids, and Nemours Health and Prevention.

County Executive Paul Clark says, “What we hope to do through this coalition is identify how we can better educate and serve the community to promote healthy living.”

The first phase of the effort will focus on identifying strengths and weaknesses in the community that either contribute to or obstruct healthy living.

A 2009 study found 26.3% of New Castle County residents were obese, while 34.8% were overweight.
