Fatal fire in Wilmington

The Wilmington Fire Department reports one person dead and three hurt, including a firefighter, in a house fire on Bird Street.
Chief Anthony Goode said early Tuesday morning that the deceased was a male and the injured citizens are both female. He says the firefighter sustained minor injuries.

The fire was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Sgt. Peter Small of New Castle County paramedics tells The News Journal that a woman was critically injured, with significant body burns.

Neighbor Frederick Purnell tells the newspaper he knew the man who lived there. Purnell says he heard an explosion and saw the house across the street on fire. He says saw the man trapped in the rubble and heard him calling for help before he died.
