DUI crackdown gets underway this weekend

Extra DUI enforcement starts this weekend as part of Checkpoint Strikeforce.

The new Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign starts tonight and runs through Labor Day weekend. DUI checkpoints will be up tonight in Lewes, Rehoboth and Newark, and on Saturday in Georgetown and Clayton. Police in the state have 529 DUI saturation patrols scheduled during the campaign.

During last year’s crackdown, police arrested 69 drivers for Driving Under the Influence and issued 924 citations for other traffic violations.

So far this year, 15 of Delaware’s 69 traffic deaths were alcohol related, which is lower than this time last year when 27 of the 64 traffic deaths were alcohol related.
