Delaware State Senator announces retirement plans

Senator George Bunting, D-Bethany Beach, says he will not run for reelection after spending 30 years in the General Assembly.

Bunting served his first term in Dover as a member of the State House from 1982 to 1984.  He returned after a two year break in 1986, and has been representing the Bethany Beach area ever since.  In 1996,  he moved from the House to the Senate.

“I brought an independent voice here.  I brought, I believe, a conservative voice in the sense that we’ve seen double digit taxes go to single digit taxes,” Bunting says of his accomplishments over the past three decades.  “Everything that I’ve done or accomplished has been with the help of certainly a lot of people.”

Although he did have a kidney transplant in 2008, Bunting says his health did not play a role in his decision not to run for office again.  “My health is good.  It was not over my health.  Certainly, working two careers sometimes is in itself stressful, but I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve done.”
