Dancing preschoolers highlight ‘Countdown to Germantown Day’ preview event [video]

On Tuesday morning, an army of pre-schoolers from Germantown’s Acclaim Academy showed off their dance moves in Vernon Park to help promote Saturday’s Countdown to Germantown Day celebration.

Despite the chilly April morning, the youths (swaddled in their colorful jackets) were ready to groove for the cameras to Beyonce’s “Move Your Body.”

“They’ve been so excited to do this,” Acclaim Academy founder Joe Martin said proudly.

Friends of Vernon Park event organizers YahNe Ndgo Baker and Angela Miles were also on hand, along with Flying Kite magazine publisher Michelle Freeman and Germantown United Community Development Corporation board president Andy Trackman.

Miles said the Acclaim Academy kids will be back on Saturday to add a martial-arts demonstration to the festivities, which will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. at the park.

The chilly weather has had organizers feeling anxious about the event, but Miles said things look good for a warm and sunny weekend.

“I’ve been checking every fifteen minutes,” she laughed.

The Countdown to Germantown Day event, kicking off a six-month countdown to Germantown’s 330th birthday in October, will feature a wide range of all-ages activities celebrating Germantown’s history and contemporary community.
