Committee formed to fill Wilmington City Council vacancy

The process of replacing a Wilmington City Council member who stepped down recently is underway.

City Council President Norman Griffiths will chair an ad-hoc selection committee that also includes Council members Kevin Kelley, Charles Potter Jr., Samuel Prado and Loretta Walsh.  The panel will review applicants for the 8th district council seat held until a few weeks ago by Steve Martelli.  Martelli, a frequent guest on WHYY ‘First’ State-of-Play, took a position with the State Department.  The deadline for interested candidates to submit letters of interest and resumes is Monday June 18th.  Council members must also submit their recommendations by this Monday.  The replacement would need to be a resident of the 8th district, and would have to be  of the same political party as the previous council member – in this instance, Democratic.  Griffiths says he’d like to have a nominee up for consideration by the full council soon to minimize the period of time that the district would be without representation.  For more information on the process contact City Council Chief of Staff Charlotte Barnes at 302-576-2340.
