Three men were rescued today from a life raft drifting off Cape May, the U.S. Coast Guard announced.

The captain of “Last Stand,” a 42-foot fishing vessel, radioed the Coast Guard for assistance following a collision with a 78-foot tug boat, dubbed “Dean Reinauer,” according to an agency release.

The three men aboard the fishing boat donned survival suits and entered a life raft, abandoning the ship within 10 minutes of the collision, the release said. The vessel ultimately sank.

A 45-foot Response Boat Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May rescued the men.

“The crew of the fishing vessel Last Stand was extremely prepared and knowledgeable on their safety equipment and procedures,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class James Pappas, Station Cape May. “They saved their own lives.”
