Climber won’t come down from tower at N.J. Coast Guard base

Authorities are trying to get a man to climb down from a 165-foot water tower on a Coast Guard base.

The Coast Guard told The Press of Atlantic Citythat the man climbed the tower in Cape May about noon Thursday. He was on a platform about 130 feet up at midafternoon and was talking to authorities.

 

Lt. Kate McHenry said the man is on active duty with the Coast Guard but isn’t a recruit at the base.Cape May police and Coast Guard police are on the scene.

The base has about 2,000 personnel including active-duty Coast Guard members and recruits going through an eight-week training program.
