Cell Tower rejected in Sussex County

A controversial cell phone tower first approval for an area along Route 1 in Bethany has now been denied.

Residents had been lobbying the Sussex County Board of Adjustments to reverse their decision.  A group of about 40 people broke out in applause at Monday’s meeting when the vote was finished.  AT&T had pitched the tower saying it needed to fill in gaps in their coverage area.

The project was first approved in November 2009.  That decision was later over turned, but AT&T appealed the decision.  The board’s rejection last night can also be appealed by the phone giant.
