HONOR: Relay Hymn – In Memoriam Terry Adkins
Monday, April 28, 5-8pm. Penn Museum, 3260 South Street, Chinese Rotunda. Honor the life and work of Penn Fine Arts Professor Terry Adkins, who passed away February 8, with the Penn community, professional colleagues, admirers, friends and family. Musician Jamaaladeen Tacuma will perform an original work in honor of his collaborations with Terry. Reception to follow.
IMAGINE: Design Advocacy Group talks Avenue of the Arts
Thursday, May 1, 8am. Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Join Paul Beideman of Avenue of the Arts Inc., Jonathan Alderson, and Kelly Vreslovic (Bohlin Cywinski Jackson) to talk about The New Vision Project for North and South Avenue of the Arts. The Vision will help answer short-term needs and achieve long-term goals to build the future of the iconic Avenue of the Arts. Free, public.
CONFER: Passenger Rail, Rail Transit, and Economic Vitality
Friday, May 2, 7:30am-5pm. Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, 190 N. Independence Mall West, 8th Floor. Spend the day discussing how transit-oriented development, quality rail transit regional connections strengthen the local economy. Dena Belzer (Strategic Economics) will discuss how transit-oriented development can serve as a problem solver. Other feature speakers include Byron Comati on SEPTA’s new capital improvement plan and Amtrak’s Drew Galloway on Northeast Corridor high-speed rail. $75 (includes breakfast and lunch), register online.

Friday, May 2, 8:30-5:30pm. Penn, McNeil Center for Early American Studies, 3355 Woodland Walk. How has immigration transformed metropolitan housing markets, created economic opportunity and transformed neighborhoods? That’s what scholars in planning, sociology, economics, policy, and history will be discussing at a daylong forum. Speakers include Penn’s Dominic Vitiello, Susan Wachter, Michael Katz, and Amada Armenta; Harvard’s Robert Sampson; and many others. Free, register online.
STROLL: Jane’s Walk: Tacony on the Move
Friday, May 2, 1pm. Meet at Tacony CDC office, Longshore Ave and Edmund Street. Join Corridor Manager Alex Balloon to tour and talk about efforts to spruce up Torresdale Avenue in Tacony through storefront improvements, and cleaning/greening programs, and check out important community spaces like the Tacony Library and Disston Park. Free.
EXPLORE: Jane’s Walk: Uncovering Historic Buildings on Lancaster Avenue
Friday, May 2, 4pm. Meet at triangle of 40th Street, Lancaster and Haverford aves. The People’s Emergency Center’s Stephanie Wall and James Wright will discuss the importance of two historic anchors of Lancaster Avenue – Hawthorne Hall and the West Philadelphia Title and Trust Company – and hopes for their future. Take a walk down Lancaster Ave to talk about façade improvements, temporary programming, and peek into Hawthorne Hall. Free.
