Apartment balcony collapse prompts county investigation

New Castle County officials are compiling a list of apartment complexes that may be in violation of a building safety code.

The investigation comes after a woman was injured Monday when a second-floor wooden balcony collapsed at Stonebridge Apartments in New Castle.

The county condemned about 130 other balconies at the apartment complex because they were built in 1989, prior to the state’s adoption of the International Building Code. The code includes general rules and regulations for construction safety.

The county plans to develop a list of other apartments that are in violation of the code in order to warn other property management companies about the safety hazard.
