UC Review: Panel discussion addresses urban parkland management

City parks constitute a major element of the quality of life in a city, but attending to both the use of the parks and their conservation can be a major headache. Those issues were addressed last week at a panel discussion on balancing those concerns.

The June 16 event, sponsored by the Sustainability Forum and held at the Academy of the Natural Sciences, was also an opportunity for the city to learn how others handle those issues.

Mike DiBerardinis, Philadelphia’s first director of the city’s recently created Parks and Recreation Department, said merging the city’s Recreation Department and the Fairmount Park Commission to form the new agency, was “the right thing to do.”
