The future of Chinatown, north of the Vine Street Expressway, is the focus of discussion at Vision for Chinatown North: A Community Forum to be held at Holy Redeemer Church & School, Theresa Hu Center on Wednesday, July 22nd at 6:00 pm. The Asian Arts Initiative and the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation are co-hosting the forum. The forum is free and open to the public, with interpretation in Cantonese and Mandarin.
Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation will present planning documents that have been developed for the neighborhood, and participating community organizations and the public are invited to respond and to contribute their own hopes for the neighborhood’s future.
Following displacement due to the expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Asian Arts Initiative is currently working to secure a permanent home in Chinatown North at 1219 Vine St. Executive Director Gayle Isa comments, “The Asian Arts Initiative now calls Chinatown North home. We have a stake in the future of the neighborhood and are excited to be co-hosting this important community visioning forum with the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation.” John Chin,
Executive Director of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation says, “As we witness the evolution of Philadelphia’s Chinatown North neighborhood, the next stage is to strengthen the community development vision that respects the Asian American community.”
Vision for Chinatown North is a public program of Chinatown In/flux: Future Landscapes, a public art exhibition celebrating the growth, change, and resiliency of Philadelphia’s Chinatown on display through August 2, 2009.
