Weekly Press: Nutter addresses sustainability and city budget at Academy of Natural Sciences Town Square Forum

Raymond Simon reports on last week’s Urban Sustainability Forum entitled “Sustainability and the City Budget: Choices and Trade-Offs for Philadelphia.”

Not only did all of the speakers share Mayor Nutter’s belief that sustainability is possible, they also presented sustainability as being both desirable and essential to the city’s continued vitality.

Sustainability refers to using natural resources prudently, as well as to a way of life that integrates sustainable methods of resource consumption. In laymen’s terms, sustainability equals green. For example, the Web site of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability says that Mayor Nutter would like to see Philadelphia become the greenest city in America (www.phila.gov/green/mos.html).
