7 things to know about why NewsWorks looks better
Much of NewsWorks has a different look now. Here’s a quick guide to what’s changed and how we hope it will improve your experience:
1. Oh so mobile
Individual articles and posts on NewsWorks now display clearly, quickly and completely on smartphones and tablets.
2. Easy reading all the time
All of the posts and articles now adapt automatically to whatever gizmo you’re using (that’s called “responsive design.”) Our new typeface is larger with more white space between lines, and a simpler page design will further enhance your reading experience.
3. Audio rocks
The new, full-featured HTML 5 audio player makes it a breeze to listen to the work of WHYY’s fine audio storytellers.
4. Photos dazzle
New high-resolution images (see below) take full advantage of the best viewing screens out there (such as iPad’s Retina Display). We also re-engineered our photo galleries to function seamlessly on tablet, phone and desktop.
5. More zing
We summoned some dark geek magic to make sure you won’t have to download any large files ― such as audio and photos ― until you’re actually ready to view them. So, you’ll spend a lot less time spent staring at rotating circles or hourglasses.
6. Social’s right here
We simplified our sharing options and made them much easier to find.
7. Easier to comment
We switched to the industry-leading Disqus commenting engine. It’s faster and easier. No more maddening verification process. Verification has been replaced by fast Facebook and Twitter log-in options, or equally fast log-in creation. And, if you use Disqus elsewhere, your logon will work on NewsWorks. Why not use the new commenting system to tell us what you think of our redesign below?
Note: Some nooks and crannies around the site haven’t been switched to the new look. We’ll be doing that in the coming weeks and months.
