SEPTA says no plans for a fare hike
Despite getting less money from Harrisburg, SEPTA says it will NOT increase fares or cut service.
Not all public transit companies in Pennsylvania are so lucky. The Port Authority of Allegheny County is one of several that have hiked fares and slashed trips from their schedules.
The Red Rose Transit Authority in Lancaster County will increase fares and eliminate about a dozen trips in August.
Richard Kirkpatrick, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, says that this is a state-wide issue of money. “The challenges faced by SEPTA and the other thirty-seven or so transit agencies across the state that run fixed service are indicative of the challenges facing the state when it comes to transportation funding,” Kirkpatrick said.
SEPTA’s new budget counts on a small increase in ridership to boost revenue.
