A 2-year-old Berkeley girl died yesterday evening after police found her floating in her next door neighbor’s in-ground pool, authorities announced.

Around 8:33 p.m., the Berkeley Township Police Department responded to the area of Bittern Lane after receiving a 911 call reporting the missing girl, said Al Della Fave, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman, in a release.

Responding officers interviewed the child’s parents and immediately began searching the surrounding neighborhood, finding the child floating in the shallow end of her next door neighbor’s in-ground pool a short time later, Della Fave said

According to the spokesman, the responders immediately rendered lifesaving measures, and the child was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River for additional treatment.

“Sadly, the child was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 9:24 p.m.,” Della Fave said.

Authorities secured the child’s residence for further investigation, which is being conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Berkeley Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI, according to the spokesman.

The investigation, according to Della Fave, is in its early stages, and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office will determine if any criminal charges are appropriate, Della Fave said.
