Rebel Souls
ListenGuest: Justin Martin
Author JUSTIN MARTIN joins us to discuss his newest book, Rebel Souls: Walt Whitman and America’s First Bohemians. The book chronicles a group of artists who all frequented Pfaff’s Saloon in New York during the 1850s. Aside from a young, trailblazing poet named Walt Whitman, the group included pioneers in stand-up comedy and so-called “drug explorers.” Guest host Mary Cummings-Jordan talks with Martin about this motley band of bohemians, their influence on American culture, and Whitman’s stint living in Camden, New Jersey.
