The Science Self-Control and True Grit

We all know what self-control is – it’s saying no to second helpings and yes to the gym.  It’s making ourselves practice piano, finish up a project at work, quit smoking or log-off from Facebook.  Researchers have found the self-control is a key predictor of success in life — children with more self-control are successful and healthier as adults.  And the good news for educators – and for all of us — is that self-control can be taught and learned.  This hour, we’ll talk with University of Pennsylvania psychologist ANGELA DUCKWORTH who studies self-control and what she refers to as “true grit.”  We’ll also hear about Yale University law professor IAN AYRES about his website which uses economic incentives to help people stick to their goals.
