Stage fright

Listen 00:48:44

Guests: Sara Solovitch, Franklin Schneier, Jenn Wasner

A lot of people get nervous speaking in front of a large audience – their palms may sweat, hands shake a little and voice quaver. But for some people the experience is downright painful and crippling. And what if you’re a musician, actor, athlete or lawyer and your livelihood depends on performing in public? This hour, we’ll explore the roots of performance anxiety and learn how to cope with it. Marty talks with SARA SOLOVITCH, author of Playing Scared: A History and Memoir of Stage Fright, and FRANKLIN SCHNEIER, special lecturer at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. And, we’ll hear from JENN WASNER, of the band Wye Oak, about the anxiety she feels when she takes the stage.
