Same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania

Listen

Guests:  Kathleen Kane, Mark Aronchick and Michael Geer

Last Tuesday, Governor Tom Corbett and Attorney General Kathleen Kane were named in a lawsuit filed in federal court that challenged Pennsylvania’s law banning same sex marriage. The suit was filed by the Pennsylvania chapter of the ACLU, the national ACLU and volunteer attorneys from the law firm of Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller on behalf of 21 Pennsylvania’s who wish to marry in Pennsylvania or want the state to recognize their out-of-state marriages. On Thursday, the Attorney General made national news when she announced she would not defend the Commonwealth in the suit because she considers Pennsylvania‘s version of the Defense of Marriage Act to be unconstitutional. In this hour of Radio Times, we’ll talk about the future of same sex marriage in Pennsylvania. We’ll start off the hour hearing from Attorney General KATHLEEN KANE about her decision not to represent the Commonwealth in the law suit and her legal opinion on samesex marriage. Then we’ll be joined by Philadelphia attorney MARK ARONCHICK who filed the suit along with the ACLU. And finally we’ll hear from MICHAEL GEER, president of the Pennsylvania Family Institute about the challenge to Pennsylvania’s law and why he supports the ban.
