Governor Christie’s weight-loss surgery

Listen

Guests: Matt Katz, Thomas Wadden, Margaret Bonafide

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie revealed last week that he underwent gastric band surgery in February. The Governor explained his reasons for the secret weight loss surgery to the New York Post: “For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them.” In lap-band surgery a band is placed around the stomach to shrink its size, make a person feel full faster so they eat less. This hour, we’ll talk about Governor Christie’s decision for surgery and the implications with MATT KATZ, staff writer for the South New Jersey bureau of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Then THOMAS WADDEN, Director of the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania discusses bariatric surgery and why losing weight is so difficult.  And we’ll hear from MARGARET BONAFIDE, a multi-media journalist with the Asbury Park Press, about her experience with gastric band surgery and her struggles with her weight.
