Closing the learning gap

Raising the education bar in Delaware is key for the Department of Education and closing the gap between white and minority students is another important factor when we look at schools. The question is can the performance be maintained, especially for those schools that have shown student growth in reading and math. And if so, will the state reward schools that keep up the good work when the data proves there is success in the classroom.

Joan Verplanck is the new head of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce, only the second woman to hold the title. Together with Delaware Today Magazine we discover Verplanck’s gender takes a backseat to her ideas and no-nonsense attitude.

Delaware’s Civil War role

On November 4, a memorial service will be held at the Gettysburg National Park in Pennsylvania to honor those from Delaware who fought in that Civil War battle. A wreath will be placed at the monument to Delaware’s First Infantry. With the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address coming this November, take a look back at the role Delaware played before and after that pivotal battle.
