Cellist Timotheos Petrin Graduation Recital

Timotheos Petrin’s, cellist from Thessaloniki, Greece, graduation recital. He was named 2016 “Performance Today” Young Artist in Residence and is currently pursues a Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory.

Schumann: Fantasiestücke, Op. 73

Schumann wrote Fantasiestücke, Op. 73 over a few days in 1849. It was originally composed for clarinet and piano; he later made an arrangement for cello and piano. The cello and piano version is more commonly performed. The movements are: Zart und mit Ausdruck (Tender and with expression); Lebhaft, leicht (Lively, light); and Rasch und mit Feuer (Quick and with fire).

Mendelssohn: Lied ohne Worte, Op. 109

Lied ohne Worte, Op. 109 (Song Without Words, Op. 109) was written as a series of short lyrical piano pieces but the last one in D major was written for cello and piano.

Shostakovich: Sonata in D minor, Op. 40

Shostakovich: Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 was one Shostakovich earlier works. He was 28 when he composed this piece. This sonata was written during a time when Shostakovich feared that he could be executed because of his music. The sonata’s four movements are marked: Allegro non troppo; Allegro; Largo and Allegro.
