Though the girl’s parents didn’t blame Strauss, her mother told him he was to do everything the rest of his life twice as well. Almost twenty years later, Strauss, an author of two historical novels, Chang and Eng and The Real McCoy, has written a memoir on his terrible, life-changing past called Half a Life.
