As the U.S.-led airstrikes against the Islamic State continue, retired Lieutenant Colonel JOHN NAGL argues that we need to do more to stop the extremists in Syria and Iraq. Nagl, who fought in both Iraq wars, wrote the most influential book on counterinsurgency strategy, Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife: Counterinsurgency Lessons from Malaya and Vietnam, and co-authored the Army and Marine Corps’ counterinsurgency field manual. In his new book Knife Fights: A Memoir of Modern War in Theory and Practice, Nagl writes about his experiences in Iraq and how they shaped his understanding of how warfare is evolving. Marty talks with Nagl, who is now the headmaster of The Haverford School outside Philadelphia, about his book and how the U.S. should responded to ISIS.
