VP charges Secret Service rent at his Delaware property

Vice President Joe Biden is taking some flack following a report today that he is charging the Secret Service to rent a cottage near his home.

According to an article in today’s Washington Times, the Secret Service has paid Biden more than $13,000 for rent on the cottage that is used to house agents so they are close to the Vice President.

The home had been used by Biden’s mother until she passed away early last year.  Since then, other tenants had been renting the cottage, but they recently moved out.  The Times article says that’s when the Secret Service moved in, picking up the $2,200 per-month rent that the previous tenants were paying.  Before moving onto Biden’s property, agents had been staying elsewhere in the Wilmington area.

According to the article, Biden could get up to $66,000 in rent from the Secret Service by the time the contract expires in 2013.
