University of Delaware statement on Arizona tragedy

The University of Delaware expressed its condolences to the families of the 19 shot in Tuscon, Az. Saturday.  The Newark campus as a double connection to the tragedy.

University of Delaware alumus Dallas Green is a former Manager of the Philadelphia Phllies.  His granddaughter Christina was among the victims killed.  In a statement released Sunday afternoon University President Harker also noted a visit from wounded Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

“The entire University of Delaware community was deeply saddened to hear of the violence that took place in Tucson, Ariz., yesterday — violence that took the lives of six people and wounded more than a dozen.

Among them were two individuals with ties to the University. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a member of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, visited UD last year to talk about the University’s sustainable-energy efforts and the nation’s path to a clean-energy future. Alumnus Dallas Green is the grandfather of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, who was killed.

The Philadelphia Phillies also expressed condolences on their website.  Green’s son John works for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  That team expressed similar condolences.
