Two heroes from Philadelphia’s prisons who were killed more than a quarter century ago got a fitting memorial today at the scene of their death. Warden Patrick Curran and Deputy Warden Robert Fromhold were stabbed to death by with two prisoners at the old Holmesburg Prison on May 31st 1973.
In an elaborate scheme involving a fake prison ID, the prisoners trapped Deputy Warden Fromhold in his office after he refused their request for an extended religious meeting. Warden Curran died in the ensuing scuffle. Two bronze plaques mark the incident at the old prison.
FOP head John McNesby says those responsible for keeping the peace never forget their fallen comrades.
“The proud men and women of the Philadelphia Prison System would never forget Curran and Fromhold, even if there weren’t an institution named for them, they would never forget those who have gone before and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Family of the two stood by as the city flags were removed uncovering the memorials, then placed roses on the plaques, which are located outside the Holmesburg Prison that is currently used as a training facility for prison guards.
