Tuesday is the New Jersey primary — here’s what you need to know

The New Jersey primary is Tuesday, June 6. This time around, voters will decide on candidates for governor and the Legislature. Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The main race to watch on Tuesday are the gubernatorial primaries. Republican Governor Chris Christie is term-limited and will finish his second term in January 2018.

Every seat in both chambers of the New Jersey Legislature is up for re-election this year. Legislators are elected from 40 legislative districts of substantially equal population. The voters in each district elect one Senator and two members of the General Assembly.

Currently, the Democrats are the majority party in both Houses. In the Senate there are 24 Democrats and 16 Republicans. There are 52 Democrats and 28 Republicans in the General Assembly.

Candidates selected in Tuesday’s primary election will represent their party in the November General Election. Over the summer other political parties will nominate candidates to compete in the General Election.
