Trash lit on fire near Manayunk Canal

A rubbish fire was reported at the intersection of Main Street and Cotton Street in Manayunk just after 8 a.m. on Friday.

A few trash bins from a local eatery were reported to be on fire behind Bryn Mawr Running Company at 4320 Main Street.

Will Caton, manager for the Machismo Burrito Bar who owned the trash bins, said that he found out about the incident when he arrived to open the restaurant for the day.

“I got into work this morning and got a text message which told me my garbage cans were burnt to shreds,” said Caton.

According to Captain Jeffrey Thompson from Philadelphia’s Office of the Fire Commissioner, the local fire department arrived on scene to find that the fire had already been put out by a construction worker who had been in the area working to renovate the Venice Island Recreation Center.

The worker used a fire extinguisher to put out the small blaze.

No further information as to the cause of the fire was available.
