Traditional flower event is in full bloom in Wilmington
Still trying to figure out what to get for Mother’s Day this year? You may be in luck thanks to the 92nd Annual Wilmington Flower Market which kicked off on Thursday at Rockford Park.
The 3-day event features a wide variety of flowers that will make a great bouquet for mom, as well as exotic flowers for the garden and office. The community is very much involved in the show and even donates flowers of their choice to help raise money for a good cause.
Each year, the Wilmington Flower Market raises funds for children charities in Delaware and last year around $125,000 was distributed to 65 different charities in the state.
“We have a great selection this year of donor plants, a little more than we had last year which is good, we also have vegetables all different types of tomatoes, peppers cucumbers,” said Maureen McCollom, general chair of the market.
Organizers are expecting large crowds to take advantage of much more than the flowers at the show. The family friendly event will have amusement park rides, music and a variety of acts.
The flower market has extended its hours this year and will remain open until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
“One of the interesting things about flower market is we’re totally volunteer run, we have no paid staff and each year we probably use about approximately a thousand volunteers to run the whole show.”
