Thousands without power in N.J. after storm

Temperatures around most of New Jersey are rising and the freezing rain that snarled much of the morning rush is ending.  

But the biggest problem is nearly 58,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey are without electricity because of an icy storm that’s causing power lines and tree limbs to snap.

The state’s largest utility, PSE&G, is reporting 38,790 customers are without service, mostly in Mercer County.

JCP&L has 15,914, mainly in Middlesex County.

Atlantic City Electric is reporting 3,134 customers without service. Many of them are in Atlantic County.

In Princeton alone, police report there downed trees were partially blocking 26 streets.Schools closed or delayed opening Wednesday.

A State of Emergency is in effect and state offices are closed for non-essential employees.

Air travelers face cancellations and delays at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Service has resumed on New Jersey Transit’s Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains.

Trains were suspended nearly three hours Wednesday because of ice on overhead power lines had created a dangerous situation.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset counties because of additional icing.

A flood advisory is in effect from Monmouth County south because ice covered storm drains could cause minor flooding of streets and highways.
