Stay off the roads, Ocean County Sheriff urges

Roadway conditions quickly deteriorated early Wednesday afternoon at the Jersey Shore as rain changed over to sleet, snow, and in some instances, hail.

Add in lightning strikes to the mix, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department is asking motorists to stay off the roadways and under a roof, according to a text alert sent at 2:38 p.m.

As of 2:45 p.m., numerous crashes have been reported along the Garden State Parkway between northern Atlantic and Monmouth counties along with the Atlantic City Expressway near the Garden State Parkway interchange.

All precipitation has changed over to snow as of 2:30 p.m., and forecasters expect it to continue through at least the early evening hours.

Tidal flooding has also been an issue, with at least minor flooding reported in Long Branch, Pelican Island, Little Egg Harbor, and Ocean City.

And firefighters are having to deal with the elements as they battle a multi-alarm fire in Ship Bottom, Long Beach Island.
